Top 10 Night Owl Picks: TV Series

Hello, night owls! If there's one form of entertainment the masses can't get enough of, it's TV series! Chances are you've got a few favorites of your own that you like to keep track of. As for me, well, if I didn't love any I wouldn't be doing this Top 10 list! So without further ado, here is my Top 10 Night Owl Picks: TV Series!!

NOTE: These are not listed in any rank or order - to figure out which ones I love more would take far too long!

1. Doctor Who
The last Gallifreyan, the oncoming storm, the madman with a box - it's the show about the greatest time traveler ever! Doctor Who centers around a time traveling, regenerating alien simply known as the Doctor, who saves the world/universe with (usually) human companions and a blue police box called the TARDIS. It's full of fun adventures, deep themes, great characters, sci-fi wackiness, horrors, and loads of other good stuff I haven't seen in other shows. If you're sick of shows that take themselves too seriously and just want something fun, crazy, and exciting, check out Doctor Who! (I love the 9th, the 10th, and the 12th, but my favorite Doctor would have to be the 11th)

2. Numb3rs
Why does this show name look like a typo? Because it's about math - and solving crime. In here, our heroes are brothers with two very different vocations. Don Eppes is an FBI agent and Charlie Eppes is a mathematics professor and math prodigy. What brings them together? Believe it or not, Charlie's mathematical knowledge proves useful to the FBI in solving crimes: a case that couldn't be cracked could be changed by one simple equation. It's a remarkable and wonderful series full of great actors and a must-see for anyone who lives crime shows.

3. Merlin
When you think of King Arthur, you either think of Excalibur and the Round Table or you think of Monty Python's irreverent take on the legend. But did you ever think about his magical companion Merlin and what role he had in the king's life? In Merlin, you get to see an interpretation of how the wizard might have come to work with Arthur and started changing his life. Full of adventures and heart, it's got a brilliant cast and plenty of interesting stories. It's funny, charming, and gripping all at once.

4. The Mentalist
One of the best crime shows ever, The Mentalist has a very interesting spin on crime solving. Patrick Jane - a former fake psychic - uses his knowledge of psychology and his power of observation to help the California Bureau of Investigation solve crimes. Why? He is on the hunt for a serial killer named Red John who maliciously murdered his family and is still roaming free. If you've never seen this show, you have to - it's one of the most interesting and enjoyable crime shows I've ever seen. And in spite of the heaviness of the Red John plot thread, it still has plenty of chances for great characters, humor, and development.

5. Sherlock
The world's favorite detective, the most famous inhabitant of 221B Baker Street...in modern times. It's one of the coolest, most fun shows ever that maintains the integrity of the characters of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's beloved characters. Master acting, clever writing, and stunning cinematography make this one of the best crime shows out there and one of my biggest personal favorites. I could literally go on and on about it, but there's no better way to see what I mean than by watching it.

6. Parks and Recreation
Parks and Rec really is one of those shows I could watch over and over without getting tired of it. The characters are crafted so well, the capers they're involved in are hilarious, and it's got plenty of moments with heart as well as humor. For just being people working in a parks and recreation department in a small town, they definitely keep things interesting! Needless to say, this show will leave you in stitches with laughter.

7. Chuck
Ever watch trailers for the latest 007 or Mission Impossible flick and moan, "Another spy movie?" Well, if you wish for something a little more irreverent that still pays homage to the best of espionage, you should check out Chuck. A young man with computer skills named Chuck Bartowski has his life turned upside down when an ex-college friend sends him an email containing a top secret software program. When this program downloads into his brain, Chuck becomes a valuable asset to the CIA and NSA, and he is thrust into the world of espionage. It's hilarious, adventurous, and wonderful and a breath of fresh air from similar movies/shows that seem too serious.

8. Broadchurch
When a boy is found dead by the cliffs of an isolated English village, trust is becomes a victim to suspicion. Such is the case with Broadchurch, a British crime show. It's a lot more dramatic and darker than most of the other shows on this list, but it is a cleverly woven tale of deception and danger that I couldn't recommend enough. With an excellent cast at the helm, you will be clamoring for the answers the instant one episode is over.

9. Lost
Technically, I haven't finished this series yet, but I'm putting it on this list already because there's so much that's good about this show. When Flight 815 wrecks on a mysterious island in the Pacific, the passengers find themselves steeped in a mysterious and dangerous world that brings out the best and the worst in them. And it is amazing. It balances several character arcs and flashbacks with elements of horror and survival that leave you breathless. There's also a lot of intrigue, since the island itself holds dark secrets that can kill or drive you mad. This is one of those ultimate shows that you absolutely cannot miss.

10. Psych
Remember above with The Mentalist how the hero used his observational abilities and psychological prowess with a dash of cleverness? Well, there's another guy like that named Shawn Spencer, only there are a couple of major differences between him and Patrick Jane: one, he is a lot more immature and two, he pretends to be a psychic. Yes, Spencer parades as a psychic consultant for the Santa Barbara Police Department and he solves crimes with his best friend Burton Guster (or simply Gus). It's a crime show that leans heavily on the humorous side, so if you're sick and tired of overly serious crime shows, then you have to check this out. It's got some of the funniest actors ever and Shawn and Gus's misadventures will have you roaring with laughter every time.
